Urban Humanities: Potential of the Humanities and the Megacity   (2015.10)

In early 2013, multiple faculties at UCLA came together to establish the Urban Humanities Initiative. The primary aim was to develop a hub for collaborative urban research that bridges the fields of architecture and humanities, with the vision of gaining international recognition. The UHI 2014-15 project, which centred on the city of Shanghai, was focused on the concept of contested spaces of identity. The project addressed numerous issues, such as spatial and morphological restructuring of the city, forms and processes of identification, uses of the past and visions of the future, aesthetics, authenticity, and the social imaginary. The study also explored how various modes of representation, such as maps, images, texts, and narratives, shape urban identities and our understanding of them. After a year-long course of study on the history, film, literature, architecture, and planning of Shanghai, mixed-discipline teams travelled to the city to explore and film one of four selected sites. The cinematic representations of Shanghai are complemented by a series of densely rendered spatial diagrams and maps, providing further dimensionality to the urban humanists' understanding of the city's past, present, and future.
